Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may lower Bispectral Index (BIS) levels during propofol anesthesia in schizophrenia patients. This study observed decreased BIS values following ECT administration in a single patient case.

Background:

  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a psychiatric treatment.
  • Propofol is commonly used for anesthesia during ECT.
  • Monitoring brain activity with Bispectral Index (BIS) is crucial.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old female patient with schizophrenia received five ECT sessions under propofol anesthesia.
  • Bispectral Index (BIS) was monitored during four of the five sessions.
  • BIS values were recorded before anesthesia, after loss of consciousness, immediately after ECT, and two minutes post-ECT.

Findings:

  • Pre-anesthesia BIS was 95.3 +/- 1.3.
  • After loss of consciousness, BIS decreased to 38.0 +/- 13.1.
  • Immediately after ECT, BIS was 45.3 +/- 12.7.

  • Implications:

    • ECT may lead to a reduction in BIS values during continuous propofol infusion.
