Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) effectively treats depression in type 2 diabetes patients. This approach, combined with diabetes education, improved mood and glycemic control in a randomized trial.

- Depression severity (Beck Depression Inventory) and glycemic control (glycosylated hemoglobin) were assessed post-treatment and at 6-month follow-up.
Main Results:
- A significantly higher percentage of patients in the CBT group achieved depression remission compared to the control group at both post-treatment (85.0% vs 27.3%) and follow-up (70.0% vs 33.3%).
- While post-treatment glycosylated hemoglobin levels did not differ, follow-up levels were significantly lower in the CBT group (9.5%) than in the control group (10.9%).
Conclusions:
- Combining cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) with supportive diabetes education offers an effective nonpharmacologic treatment for major depression in type 2 diabetes patients.
- This combined approach may also lead to improvements in glycemic control.
