Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Immunohistochemistry

Background:

  • Histiocytic sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of macrophages or dendritic cells.
  • Dendritic reticular cell sarcoma is a rare variant, often affecting lymph nodes.

Observation:

  • A case of dendritic reticular cell sarcoma in the axillary lymph nodes of a 20-year-old male is presented.
  • The primary tumor was surgically excised.
  • Recurrence was observed two years post-treatment with radiation and polychemotherapy.

Findings:

  • Histological examination of both primary and recurrent tumors revealed similar characteristics.
  • Electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry were employed to study the tumor's cellular nature.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the aggressive nature and potential for recurrence of dendritic reticular cell sarcoma.
  • Further research into the specific immunophenotype and behavior of this rare sarcoma variant is warranted.
