Summary

Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a safe and effective treatment for bladder stones in men. Most patients became stone-free within a week after ESWL therapy.

Background:

  • Bladder stones (vesical lithiasis) can cause significant patient discomfort and complications.
  • Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive treatment option for bladder stones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ESWL for treating bladder stones in male patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 17 male patients with bladder stones treated with ESWL between 1991 and 1997.
  • ESWL was performed under epidural anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
  • Some patients required repeat sessions or additional mechanical cystolithotripsy.

Main Results:

  • Complete stone fragmentation was achieved in 9 patients after one session and 4 required two sessions.
