    Area of Science:

    • Dietary science
    • Dermatology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Malignant melanoma is a serious skin cancer.
    • Dietary factors are investigated for their role in cancer development.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if polyunsaturated fat consumption is a risk factor for malignant melanoma.
    • To compare fat intake between melanoma patients and a control group.

    Main Methods:

    • Dietary assessment of polyunsaturated fat intake.
    • Comparison between patients diagnosed with malignant melanoma and patients with benign naevi.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with malignant melanoma did not report excessive polyunsaturated fat consumption.
    • No statistically significant association was found between polyunsaturated fat intake and melanoma incidence.

    Conclusions:

    • The study found no evidence that polyunsaturated fats predispose individuals to malignant melanoma.
    • Dietary polyunsaturated fat intake is not associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma.
