Summary

Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a significant prognostic factor for osteosarcoma patients. Further evaluation of cancer-related molecular markers, including tumor markers and genomic changes, is proposed for cancer prognostication.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Cancer Genomics

Context:

  • Tumor markers are increasingly recognized as prognostic factors in cancer patient management.
  • The TNM classification system is a standard for cancer staging.
  • Osteosarcoma is a primary bone cancer with complex prognostic indicators.

Purpose:

  • To identify significant prognostic factors for cancer patients.
  • To propose a new concept of 'cancer related molecular markers' for cancer prognostication.
  • To establish criteria for evaluating novel molecular markers in cancer.

Summary:

  • While several tumor markers show prognostic significance, only serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) meets established criteria for osteosarcoma.
  • The concept of 'cancer related molecular markers' is introduced, encompassing circulating tumor markers and genomic alterations.
  • Proposed markers must be independent prognostic factors with reproducible and accessible assays.

Impact:

  • Potential to refine cancer prognostication beyond current TNM staging.
  • Highlights the importance of serum ALP as a key prognostic marker in osteosarcoma.
  • Provides a framework for validating new molecular markers in oncology research.
