Auditory afterimage: tonotopic representation in the auditory cortex

Summary

The auditory afterimage, a lingering sound sensation, originates in the auditory cortex. Neuromagnetic imaging shows its neural activity is similar to sustained responses from continuous sound.

The physiological basis of auditory afterimages remains unclear, unlike visual afterimages.
Auditory afterimages are brief auditory sensations following a sound stimulus.
These afterimages spectrally resemble the inverse of the original sound.
