Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Functioning parathyroid cysts are rare causes of hypercalcemia.
  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) overproduction by these cysts leads to elevated serum calcium.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with symptoms of hypercalcemia and neck masses.
  • Imaging studies confirmed functioning parathyroid cysts in both individuals.

Findings:

  • Both patients exhibited high serum calcium and PTH levels.
  • Parathyroidectomy resolved hypercalcemia and normalized PTH levels in both cases.
  • One patient required post-operative calcium supplementation.

Implications:

  • Functioning parathyroid cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical management is effective in treating hypercalcemia caused by these cysts.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent severe complications of hypercalcemia.
