Summary

A spermatocele, a benign scrotal cyst, can present as a paratesticular mass, mimicking cancer on imaging. This case highlights the importance of considering spermatocele in the differential diagnosis of paratesticular neoplasms.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Paratesticular masses require accurate diagnosis to differentiate between neoplastic and benign conditions.
  • Imaging modalities like ultrasound are crucial for initial assessment of scrotal abnormalities.

Observation:

  • A 58-year-old male presented with paratesticular swelling and a palpable firm mass.
  • Ultrasound revealed a paratesticular mass with complex echogenicity and calcifications, suggestive of a neoplasm.

Findings:

  • Post-orchidectomy, histopathological examination confirmed the mass as a spermatocele with calcifications.
  • The spermatocele mimicked the imaging characteristics of a paratesticular neoplasm.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case underscores the potential for benign conditions like spermatocele to present as malignant-appearing paratesticular masses.
  • Radiologists and urologists should include spermatocele in the differential diagnosis of complex paratesticular lesions to avoid unnecessary aggressive treatment.
