Background:

  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication after general anesthesia.
  • Surgical experience may influence the incidence and severity of PONV.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between surgeon experience and the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).

Main Methods:

  • A post hoc analysis of 167 patients from three randomized controlled trials on PONV prevention in middle ear surgery.
  • Data included patients undergoing general anesthesia with transdermal scopolamine, ondansetron, or propofol.

Main Results:

  • Patients operated on by residents reported higher rates of PONV (69% vs. 42%) and retching/vomiting (52% vs. 23%) compared to those operated on by specialists.
