Summary

Oral squamous cell carcinoma biofilms contain significantly higher numbers of bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic, compared to healthy oral mucosa. This microbial imbalance may contribute to increased infection risk and complications in cancer patients.

Background:

  • To investigate and compare the microbial composition of biofilms on oral squamous cell carcinoma surfaces versus adjacent healthy mucosa.

Conclusions:

  • The presence of increased microbial load and specific pathogens like Candida albicans in oral tumors has implications for patient susceptibility to infections.
  • These findings highlight the importance of considering the tumor's microbial biofilm in the context of oral cancer morbidity and treatment strategies.
