    Background:

    • Bremsstrahlung x-rays result from energetic beta-particle interactions.
    • Quantifying this radiation is crucial for internal contamination assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure total-body bremsstrahlung efficiency in various animal models.
    • To extrapolate these findings for human internal contamination estimations.

    Main Methods:

    • In vivo measurements of bremsstrahlung efficiency were conducted in mice, rats, rabbits, and dogs injected with Strontium-90 (90Sr) and Strontium-85 (85Sr).
    • Efficiency was determined by comparing 90Sr/90Y bremsstrahlung output to 85Sr gamma-ray emission.
    • Results were validated using beta-assays on ashed animal samples.

    • Bremsstrahlung efficiencies increased with animal mass, ranging from 1.10 in mice to 1.32 in dogs.

    Conclusions:

    • Animal bremsstrahlung efficiency data can be extrapolated to estimate human internal contamination.
    • This method provides a reliable approach for assessing 90Sr body burden.
