Summary

Glaucoma drainage implants show good outcomes in Asian eyes with complicated glaucoma. Success rates for intraocular pressure control are comparable to non-Asian patients, indicating no significant racial differences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of glaucoma drainage implants in Asian patients with complex glaucoma.
  • To compare the outcomes of glaucoma implant surgery in Asian versus non-Asian patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 83 Asian patients undergoing glaucoma implant surgery (Molteno or Baerveldt).
  • Follow-up duration of at least 6 months.
  • Outcomes measured by intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, and complications.

Main Results:

  • 73.5% achieved successful IOP control (<22 mmHg without medication).
  • 85.5% had stable or improved visual acuity.
  • Low incidence of serious intraoperative and postoperative complications; hyphema and bullous keratopathy were most common.

Conclusions:

  • Glaucoma drainage implants are effective for managing complicated glaucoma in Asian eyes.
  • Outcomes are comparable to those reported in non-Asian populations.
  • Implants provide good visual stabilization and IOP control.
