Summary

Naproxen, a common NSAID, can rarely cause permanent hearing loss. This case highlights the risk even in healthy individuals, prompting a review of NSAID-induced ototoxicity.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pharmacology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for pain and inflammation.
  • Known side effects of NSAIDs include tinnitus and temporary hearing impairment.
  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare but serious potential adverse effect of NSAID therapy.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of permanent SSNHL in an otherwise healthy patient following a short naproxen regimen.
  • The patient had no pre-existing conditions or concurrent use of other ototoxic agents that typically predispose to NSAID-induced hearing loss.

Findings:

  • NSAID-induced ototoxicity, particularly permanent SSNHL, is an under-recognized clinical concern.
  • Permanent hearing loss from NSAIDs can occur even in the absence of typical risk factors like renal dysfunction or autoimmune disease.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for NSAID-induced ototoxicity, even in healthy patients.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms of permanent NSAID-related hearing loss and identify susceptible individuals.
  • Awareness of this rare but severe side effect is crucial for patient counseling and medication safety.
