Summary

Severe ischemic colitis can affect marathon runners due to dehydration and blood flow changes. Prompt diagnosis and conservative treatment led to full recovery, allowing the athlete to resume training.

Background:

  • Physiological shunting from splanchnic vasoconstriction, dehydration-induced volume depletion, and potential hypercoagulability from secondary polycythemia were identified as causative factors.
