Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition with an unknown cause.
  • Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element with antioxidant properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum selenium concentrations in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
  • To compare selenium levels between fibromyalgia patients and a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

  • Serum selenium levels were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • The method involved derivatization with diaminonaphthalene (DAN) for fluorescence detection of selenite.
  • Patients and controls were age- and sex-matched for comparison.

  • Fibromyalgia patients exhibited a statistically significant lower median serum selenium level (71 microg/l) compared to the control group (77 microg/l).
