Trachoma prevalence significantly decreased in The Gambia over a decade. Active trachoma fell by 54%, and blinding trachoma reduced by 80% between 1986 and 1996 surveys.

Background:

  • The Gambia conducted a second National Survey of Blindness and Low Vision in 1996.
  • This survey specifically examined participants for trachoma, comparing findings to a 1986 survey.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess changes in trachoma prevalence in The Gambia over a 10-year period.
  • To compare current trachoma rates with those from a previous national survey in 1986.

Main Methods:

  • A multistage stratified cluster random sample was employed for the survey.
  • Settlement size was used for stratification, and the simplified WHO grading system assessed trachoma.
  • 92.5% of the 14,110 sampled individuals were examined.

Main Results:

  • Active inflammatory trachoma (TF or TI) affected 3.0% of all ages and 5.9% of children (0-9 years).
  • Trichiasis was present in 3.3% and trachomatous corneal opacities in 0.9% of adults aged 30+.
  • Blinding trachomatous corneal opacities decreased from 0.10% to 0.02%.

Conclusions:

  • Active trachoma prevalence decreased by 54% compared to the 1986 survey.
  • A significant 80% relative reduction in blinding trachomatous corneal opacities was observed over the decade.
