Summary

Polyethylene glycol/electrolyte solution effectively treats fecal impaction. This oral therapy, administered over several hours, resolved or improved impaction in all 16 patients with minimal side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of oral polyethylene glycol/electrolyte solution for treating fecal impaction.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label study involving 16 patients with fecal impaction.
  • Patients received up to 1 liter of polyethylene glycol/electrolyte solution orally per day for 3 days, administered over 4-6 hours.

Main Results:

  • Complete resolution of fecal impaction was achieved in 13 out of 16 patients.
  • Significant improvement was observed in the remaining 3 patients.
