Summary

Flame figures, characterized by eosinophil granules on collagen, are observed in bullous pemphigoid cases. This finding, particularly in elderly patients, suggests a potential link between dermal eosinophilia and flame figure formation in this autoimmune blistering disease.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune blistering disease.
  • Histopathological examination is crucial for diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A case of bullous pemphigoid presented with characteristic "flame figures" on biopsy.
  • Flame figures represent eosinophil granule accumulation on collagen fibers.
  • Retrospective analysis of 34 bullous pemphigoid cases revealed flame figures in 8.8%.

Findings:

  • The presence of flame figures in bullous pemphigoid is not exceedingly rare.
  • Flame figures were noted in elderly patients (over 80 years old).
  • Dermal eosinophilia degree may correlate with flame figure formation.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This association warrants further investigation in bullous pemphigoid.
  • Flame figures may serve as a potential diagnostic or prognostic indicator.
  • Understanding this histological feature could refine understanding of bullous pemphigoid pathogenesis.
