Topiramate efficacy in infancy

Summary

Topiramate shows promise for treating partial seizures in infants when other drugs fail. This antiepileptic drug demonstrated excellent efficacy and tolerability in two young infants.

Background:

Topiramate is an established antiepileptic drug for adults with partial onset seizures.
Pediatric epilepsy treatment experience with topiramate is limited but shows early promise.
Standard antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) may be ineffective for some pediatric patients.

Observation:

Two infants, aged 12 and 9 months, with frequent partial seizures were treated with topiramate.
The study assessed the efficacy and tolerability of topiramate in these young patients.
Doses administered were up to 7.7 mg/kg.

Findings:

Topiramate demonstrated excellent efficacy in resolving partial seizures in both infants.
The treatment was well-tolerated, with good tolerability observed.
Significant seizure reduction was achieved in this small cohort.

Implications:

Topiramate may be a viable treatment option for infants with refractory partial seizures.
Further research is needed to establish long-term safety and efficacy in pediatric populations.
This study supports exploring topiramate for difficult-to-treat epilepsy in very young children.
