Silicone breast implants: a review

The diagnostic imaging procedures used to evaluate silicone prostheses used for breast augmentation are reviewed. The nature of silicone and the types of prostheses used are discussed, as are the complications and risks from use of these prostheses. For each imaging modality, mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging, criteria for rupture with examples of silicone leak into adjacent tissues are given.
