    Summary

    This study found no secondary rise in human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during the third trimester. Less specific assays falsely elevate hCG levels in late pregnancy.

    Background:

    • Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a key hormone in pregnancy.
    • Previous studies using less specific immunoassays suggested a secondary hCG peak in the third trimester.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the accuracy of third-trimester hCG measurements.
    • To determine if observed secondary peaks are artifacts of cross-reacting substances.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassay (beta-hCG) was used to measure hCG levels.
    • Sera from 443 pregnant women were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • hCG was detectable as early as six days post-conception.
    • hCG levels peaked between 56-68 days and reached a nadir at 18 weeks.
