Summary

Anatomical variations in the coeliac trunk, such as a common origin for the left inferior phrenic and left gastric arteries, are critical for surgical planning. Awareness of these arterial variations is essential for safe abdominal procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular anatomy
  • Embryological development of splanchnic arteries

Background:

  • The coeliac trunk, a major artery supplying the upper abdominal organs, exhibits significant anatomical variations.
  • These variations arise from complex developmental processes of the ventral splanchnic arteries during embryogenesis.

Observation:

  • This report details a specific anatomical variation involving a long coeliac trunk (4.3 cm).
  • The left inferior phrenic artery and the left gastric artery originated from this coeliac trunk via a shared common trunk.

Findings:

  • A rare anatomical variation of the coeliac trunk was identified, characterized by a common origin for the left inferior phrenic artery and left gastric artery.
  • The length of the observed coeliac trunk was measured at 4.3 cm.

Implications:

  • Anatomical variations of the coeliac trunk are clinically significant and must be considered during abdominal surgeries.
  • Knowledge of diverse coeliac trunk variations is crucial for both surgical and non-surgical diagnostic evaluations to prevent complications.
