    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychotherapy Research

    Background:

    • Psychoanalytic group therapy is a common treatment modality.
    • Patient satisfaction and long-term outcomes require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate long-term outcomes and patient satisfaction after psychoanalytic group therapy.
    • To identify factors correlating with favorable treatment outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective study involving 42 patients interviewed 2-14 years post-therapy.
    • Comparison of psychodynamic changes between short-term (<6 months) and long-term (>2 years) participants.
    • Case studies of 13 patients selected for positive outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in psychodynamic changes between short-term and long-term groups.
    • Majority of patients reported high dissatisfaction with group therapy experiences.
    • Strong positive correlation found between favorable outcomes and prior individual psychotherapy.
    • Selected patients showed beneficial effects, but such cases appear rare.

    Conclusions:

    • Psychoanalytic group therapy may require modifications for improved effectiveness.
    • The direct transfer of individual psychoanalytic approaches to group settings may be inappropriate.
    • Previous individual psychotherapy is a significant predictor of positive outcomes in group therapy.
