Background:

Vertigo and dizziness in children are underrecognized but common, often stemming from middle ear effusion.
Chronic middle ear effusion is a prevalent pediatric condition frequently overlooked for its impact on balance.

Purpose of the Study:

To objectively assess the incidence of balance problems in children with persistent middle ear effusion.
To determine if inserting ventilation tubes resolves these balance-related symptoms.

Main Methods:

Electronystagmography and motor proficiency tests (Bruininks-Oseretsky) were administered to 136 children (ages 4-9) with middle ear effusion.
Tests were conducted before and after middle ear ventilation tube insertion, with comparisons to 74 healthy controls.

Main Results:

Pathologic balance findings were present in 58% of children with chronic middle ear effusion versus 4% in controls.
Balance disturbances resolved in 96% of children following ventilation tube insertion.

Conclusions:

Chronic middle ear effusion is a significant cause of balance-related symptoms in children.
Evacuation of middle ear effusion and ventilation via tubes effectively resolves pediatric balance issues.
