Abstract:
Membrane proteins invest the membranes of living cells and organelles with such functions as energy conversion, molecular transport and signal transduction. The number of known structures of membrane proteins is less than 20, which is too few to understand the highly organized biological reactions in a cell. The whole procedure, including crystallization, for bovine heart cytochrome c oxidase is described as an example of crystal structural analysis of a membrane protein. Structural features of membrane proteins and structure-function relationships of the enzyme are also discussed.
