    Summary

    For women without a cervix, urethral cultures are the most effective for detecting Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea) infections. Vaginal and rectal cultures showed lower detection rates in this study.

    Background:

    • Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a significant cause of sexually transmitted infections.
    • Hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, alters the female reproductive anatomy.
    • The absence of the cervix may impact the detection sites for anogenital gonorrhea.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify the most sensitive culture site for diagnosing Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in women post-hysterectomy.
    • To evaluate the utility of urethral, vaginal, and rectal cultures in this specific patient population.

    • Clinical guidelines for gonorrhea screening may need to consider the impact of hysterectomy on optimal culture site selection.
