Summary

Cytarabine (Ara-C) can induce pericarditis, a serious side effect in leukemia patients. This study highlights two cases of Ara-C-induced pericarditis, emphasizing the need for awareness and prompt management.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are hematologic malignancies.
  • Cytarabine (Ara-C) is a common chemotherapeutic agent used in treating these conditions.
  • Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, potentially leading to serious complications.

Observation:

  • Two patients with AML/MDS developed fever and pericardial effusion during or after cytarabine (Ara-C) treatment.
  • Diagnostic pericardiocentesis revealed exudative effusion with neutrophils, ruling out infection.
  • Symptoms resolved with corticosteroids and pericardial drainage.

Findings:

  • The cases suggest a diagnosis of allergic pericarditis induced by cytarabine (Ara-C).
  • Six additional patients with Ara-C syndrome were encountered, indicating a potential pattern.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This highlights a rare but significant adverse reaction to Ara-C chemotherapy.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians should consider cytarabine (Ara-C)-induced pericarditis in patients presenting with these symptoms.
    • Early recognition and management are crucial to prevent complications.
    • Further investigation into the mechanism and incidence of Ara-C-induced pericarditis is warranted.
