Some effects of positively charged surface groups on cell aggregation

D E Maslow, L Weiss

    Journal of Cell Science
    |July 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride (DMA) reduces embryonic neural retina cell aggregation by affecting positive surface charges. While DMA impacts cell mobility in serum, it does not alter amino acid incorporation or aggregate structure.

    Area of Science:

    • Cell Biology
    • Developmental Biology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Cell aggregation is crucial for embryonic development.
    • Surface charge interactions are known to influence cell adhesion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of positive charges in neural retina cell aggregation.
    • To determine the effect of 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride (DMA) on cell surface charge and aggregate formation.

    Main Methods:

    • Embryonic chick neural retina cells were cultured with DMA.
    • Aggregate diameters and electrophoretic mobilities were measured.
    • Cellular uptake of 14C-amino acids and serum protein interactions were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • DMA significantly reduced aggregate size.
    • DMA increased cell electrophoretic mobility in serum-containing medium.
    • DMA did not affect amino acid incorporation or aggregate structure.

    Conclusions:

    • Positively charged cell surface components play a role in cell aggregation.
    • Serum proteins may have a minor role in mediating these charge-dependent interactions.
