Background:

  • Allergen-induced complement activation is implicated in ragweed allergy symptom development.
  • Previous observations suggest a link between complement activation and allergy severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between individual skin reactivity to ragweed allergen extract (RWA) and complement activation products.
  • To further support the role of complement activation in ragweed allergy.

Main Methods:

  • Skin prick testing with RWA was performed on 48 ragweed-allergic patients.
  • Patient sera were incubated with RWA, and complement activation products (C3bBbP and C5b-9) were measured using ELISA.
  • Statistical analysis using Spearman correlation was employed.

  • Correlation coefficients (r) were 0.495 (P=0.0004) and 0.454 (P=0.0012) respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Complement activation products, specifically C3bBbP, are associated with skin reactivity in ragweed allergy.
  • These findings reinforce the hypothesis that complement activation exacerbates IgE-mediated immunopathology in ragweed allergy.
