Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Conventional audiometry relies on subjective patient responses.
  • Objective measures are needed for accurate hearing threshold evaluation.
  • Cortical evoked response audiometry offers a potential objective method.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel method for objective hearing threshold evaluation using cortical evoked response audiometry.
  • To create an objective audiogram visualizing auditory evoked potential (AEP) significance.
  • To compare objective and electrophysiological thresholds.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a method for objective hearing threshold evaluation using cortical evoked response audiometry.
  • Tested four frequencies (500-3000 Hz) quasi-simultaneously with 5 dB intensity steps.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessed AEP significance using the Rayleigh test on phase values from single-trial epochs.
  • Main Results:

    • A retrospective analysis of 1,920 threshold estimations in 240 subjects was performed.
    • The detection threshold averaged 7.5 dB above the electrophysiological threshold.
    • Amplitude-intensity data fitted the function a(1 - exp(-I/b)).

    Conclusions:

    • The developed method provides an objective audiogram for hearing threshold assessment.
    • This technique offers a reliable and objective alternative for hearing evaluations.
    • Further research can refine this objective audiometry approach.
