    Background:

    • Paraesophageal hernias are rare but life-threatening conditions.
    • Laparoscopic surgery has improved the repair of these hernias.
    • This study reviews 20 cases of laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic repair for paraesophageal hernias.
    • To assess outcomes and complications associated with the procedure.
    • To provide data for surgical decision-making regarding concomitant procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • Laparoscopic repair was performed on 20 patients with paraesophageal hernias.
    • Eighteen patients underwent primary repair; two required mesh reinforcement.
    • Fifteen patients had a concomitant fundoplication procedure.

    Main Results:

    • No in-hospital morbidity or mortality was observed.
    • Average length of hospital stay was 2.3 days.
    • One early recurrence occurred; no other recurrences or postoperative complications were reported.

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic repair of paraesophageal hernias is a viable option.
    • Preoperative esophageal motility evaluation is recommended to guide anti-reflux procedure decisions.
    • Excellent results can be achieved without prosthetic material in most cases.
