Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Clinical Outcomes

Background:

  • Appendicitis remains a common surgical emergency.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy has become the preferred surgical approach.
  • Special populations, including gynecological patients, present unique challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic appendectomy for appendicitis.
  • To analyze outcomes in a decade of patient data.
  • To determine the appropriateness of prophylactic appendectomies during gynecological procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 406 patients treated for appendicitis between 1987 and 1997.
  • Comparison of endoscopic appendectomy (n=392) versus laparotomy (n=14).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Inclusion of data on special patient groups: pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, pregnancy, and elderly patients.
  • Main Results:

    • Endoscopic appendectomy was performed in 392 patients with manageable intraoperative difficulties.
    • Severe postoperative complications occurred in 13 patients.
    • No prophylactic appendectomies were performed during gynecological laparoscopies due to complication risks.

    Conclusions:

    • Endoscopic appendectomy is a safe and effective treatment for appendicitis.
    • Careful patient selection and surgical technique are crucial for successful outcomes.
    • Prophylactic appendectomy during gynecological laparoscopy is not advised due to associated risks.
