Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology and Traditional Medicine
  • Metabolic Disorders Research

Background:

  • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a significant global health concern.
  • Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge rhizome is a traditional herbal medicine.
  • Mangiferin (MF) and its glucosides (MG) are bioactive compounds found in this rhizome.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Mangiferin (MF) and its glucosides (MG).
  • To investigate the effects of MF and MG on blood glucose and insulin levels in a diabetic animal model.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of Mangiferin (MF) and mangiferin-7-O-beta-glucoside (MG) from Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge rhizome.
  • Administration of MF and MG to KK-Ay mice, an established animal model for NIDDM.
  • Monitoring of blood glucose levels in both diabetic (KK-Ay) and normal mice.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of hyperinsulinemia in KK-Ay mice.
  • Main Results:

    • Oral administration of MF and MG significantly lowered blood glucose levels in KK-Ay mice.
    • No significant effect on blood glucose was observed in normal mice, suggesting specific action in diabetes.
    • Both MF and MG demonstrated an improvement in hyperinsulinemia among KK-Ay mice.

    Conclusions:

    • Mangiferin (MF) and its glucosides (MG) possess significant antidiabetic properties.
    • The compounds appear to exert their therapeutic effects by enhancing insulin sensitivity.
    • MF and MG are potential therapeutic agents for managing NIDDM.
