Abstract:
There is a high prevalence of hypertension in women and it increases as they become older. The incidence of cardiovascular events in hypertensive women is also high. Although there are differences between male and female hypertensives, they have not been considered in the design of studies of antihypertensive therapy. The influence of menopause has also not been considered. Efficacy of nonpharmacologic intervention is worse in women. In general, women and men respond similarly to pharmacologic antihypertensive therapy, although in studies with adult hypertensives, the efficacy in women has been controversial. Studies in older patients, with an adequate inclusion of women, showed a similar efficacy in both genders. Some classes of drugs may be more or less effective in men than in women, but more research is needed in this field. More data are also required on hypertensive therapy in women in relation to their hormonal status.
