Summary

Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis offers a less invasive and less painful alternative to open surgery for ankle fusion. This technique achieved clinical ankylosis in all patients, with successful bone fusion in most cases.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures

Background:

  • Arthroscopy is increasingly accepted for complex ankle issues.
  • Technical advancements enable more extensive arthroscopic debridement.
  • Arthroscopy is now viable for successful ankle arthrodesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis.
  • To assess outcomes in patients with various forms of arthritis.

Main Methods:

  • Five patients underwent arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis for conditions including post-traumatic, rheumatoid, and gouty/pyogenic arthritis.
  • Procedures involved arthroscopic resection of articular surfaces and autogenous iliac bone grafting.
  • Internal fixation with percutaneous screws was used in three cases, followed by casting.

Main Results:

  • All patients achieved clinical ankylosis.
  • Radiographic evidence of bone fusion was observed in four out of five cases.
  • One case of delayed union was successfully treated by the 12-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis is less invasive, less painful, and offers better cosmesis than open surgery.
  • A learning curve and time commitment are associated with the procedure.
  • Severe deformities are contraindications, necessitating open surgical methods.
