Background:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management often involves oxygen therapy.
  • Nasal oxygen delivery can be insufficient for patients with advanced respiratory failure.

Observation:

  • Four patients in a preterminal stage with pulmonary fibrosis and bronchoalveolic carcinoma were treated.
  • Previous oxygen administration via nasal devices was ineffective for these patients.

Findings:

  • Transtracheal oxygen therapy (TTOT) was administered to patients with advanced lung diseases.
  • TTOT effectively reduced dyspnoea (shortness of breath).
  • Patients experienced improved exercise tolerance and a reduced hospital stay.
