Summary

Ophthalmologists should consider orbital dirofilariasis in diagnosing orbital inflammatory masses. This parasitic infection may be underdiagnosed in Italy, even without a travel history to endemic areas.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Parasitology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Orbital inflammatory masses can present with non-specific symptoms.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate treatment and management.

Observation:

  • Two cases of orbital dirofilariasis were identified.
  • Patients presented with orbital swelling and pain, initially diagnosed as inflammatory pseudotumor.

Findings:

  • Orbital dirofilariasis is a rare parasitic infection of the eye socket.
  • The cases highlight the potential for underdiagnosis, particularly in regions like Italy.

Implications:

  • Ophthalmologists should include orbital dirofilariasis in the differential diagnosis of orbital inflammatory conditions.
  • Increased awareness may lead to earlier detection and improved patient outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to understand the true incidence of dirofilariasis in non-endemic travelers.
