Summary

Myringosclerosis, a condition affecting the eardrum, develops rapidly after myringotomy (eardrum incision). This study reveals its establishment is linked to an inflammatory response in the eardrum.

Background:

  • Myringosclerosis is a common condition characterized by calcareous deposits in the tympanic membrane.
  • The precise temporal development and underlying mechanisms of myringosclerosis following iatrogenic injury remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the temporal progression of myringosclerosis after myringotomy in a rodent model.
  • To correlate the onset and development of myringosclerosis with inflammatory responses.

Main Methods:

  • Myringotomy was performed bilaterally on Sprague-Dawley rats.
  • Animals were sacrificed at various time points (3-84 hours) post-procedure for otomicroscopic, light, and electron-microscopic examination.
  • Pars flaccida and pars tensa tissues were analyzed for sclerotic changes and inflammatory markers.
