Summary

This study reports the first cases of spinal cord hydatidosis in two students. The rare parasitic infection caused severe back pain and neurological deficits.

Background:

  • Hydatidosis is a cyclozoonotic parasitic disease with dogs as definitive hosts and humans as incidental intermediate hosts.
  • While liver and lung are common sites for human hydatid cysts, spinal cord involvement is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • Two preparatory school pupils presented with severe back pain and bilateral lower limb neurological deficits.
  • Symptoms included motor and sensory impairments and abnormal knee reflexes, indicating spinal cord compromise.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal and subsequent histological and parasitological examinations confirmed spinal cord hydatid cysts in both patients.
  • This marks the first documented instance of spinal cord hydatidosis in human subjects.

Implications:

  • The findings highlight the importance of considering parasitic infections, such as hydatidosis, in the differential diagnosis of spinal cord disorders.
  • Clinicians should maintain awareness of rare presentations of disseminating parasites, even in unusual locations like the spinal cord.
