Summary

Shift work, especially rotating night shifts, may negatively impact reproductive health. Studies suggest links to longer time to pregnancy, increased spontaneous abortion risk, and preterm birth.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Reproductive Epidemiology
  • Sleep Medicine

Background:

  • Nonstandard work hours can disrupt physiological functions.
  • The impact of shift work on reproductive outcomes remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and synthesize evidence on the association between shift work and reproductive outcomes.
  • To identify specific types of shift work potentially linked to adverse reproductive events.

Main Methods:

  • Review of published studies examining shift work and pregnancy.
  • Analysis of associations with time to pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth retardation.

Main Results:

  • Two studies suggest rotating shift work is linked to prolonged waiting time for pregnancy.
  • Several studies indicate shift work, particularly night shifts, may increase risks of spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth retardation.

Conclusions:

  • While evidence is not conclusive, shift work, especially involving evening/night shifts and irregular schedules, should be considered a potential reproductive risk.
  • Further research with clear definitions of shift work is needed to clarify these associations.
