Summary

Ropinirole, a new dopamine agonist, significantly improved restless legs syndrome (RLS) symptoms in an open-label trial. This study suggests ropinirole is a promising treatment for RLS, warranting further investigation.

Background:

  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disorder.
  • RLS is characterized by an urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations.
  • It is frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of ropinirole in patients with RLS.
  • To assess the potential of ropinirole as a novel therapeutic option for RLS.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label trial was conducted involving 16 patients diagnosed with RLS.
  • Patients received ropinirole at a mean daily dose of 2.8 mg (range, 0.5-12.0 mg).
  • Symptom improvement was assessed using the abbreviated International Restless Legs Study Group questionnaire.

  • 13 out of 16 patients completed the study.
  • A significant improvement of 58.7% in RLS symptoms was reported (p = 1.08 x 10(-8)).
  • Three patients discontinued the trial due to adverse events (rash, nervousness) or other reasons.
