Multiple pregnancies show higher human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels but normal thyroid hormone levels compared to singleton pregnancies. The thyrotropic action of hCG differs significantly in multiple pregnancies, indicating altered thyroid regulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate thyroid function in multiple pregnancies.
  • To assess the thyrotropic action of hCG in women with multiple gestations.
  • To compare thyroid function and hCG characteristics between multiple and singleton pregnancies.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples from 9 women with multiple pregnancies (twins and triplets) and 27 with singleton pregnancies were analyzed.
  • Measurements included serum hCG, free triiodothyronine (free T3), free thyroxine (free T4), and thyroid-stimulating activity (TSA) using FRTL-5 cells.

    • Serum hCG levels were significantly higher in multiple pregnancies during the second and third trimesters.

    Conclusions:

    • Despite elevated hCG, thyroid hormone levels remain normal in multiple pregnancies.
    • The thyrotropic action of hCG is altered in multiple pregnancies, potentially due to heterogeneous hCG molecular forms.
    • This suggests a complex interplay between hCG and thyroid regulation specific to multiple gestations.
