Summary

Left atrial appendage ligation during mitral valve surgery can lead to partial occlusion. A rare case showed a high-velocity jet from a partially ligated left atrial appendage using Doppler echocardiography.

Background:

Left atrial appendage (LAA) ligation is a common surgical procedure during mitral valve surgery.
The goal of LAA ligation is to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events.
Partial LAA occlusion has been previously identified post-surgery.

Observation:

Transesophageal echocardiography has previously identified partially occluded LAA post-surgery.
This report details an unusual case identified via Doppler echocardiography.
The case involved a partially ligated LAA.

Findings:

Doppler echocardiography revealed a high-velocity jet originating from the partially ligated LAA.
This finding is uncommon and suggests turbulent flow within the LAA remnant.
The jet's velocity indicates significant hemodynamic alteration.

Implications:

This case highlights a potential complication of LAA ligation.
Doppler echocardiography can detect abnormal flow patterns in partially ligated LAA.
Further investigation may be needed to understand the clinical significance of these jets.
