Summary

Helium-oxygen (heliox) mixtures reduce inhaled albuterol mass and alter particle size compared to air. Increasing heliox flow can optimize nebulizer performance for better medication delivery.

Area of Science:

  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Pharmacology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen, is used in respiratory care to reduce work of breathing.
  • Nebulizers are devices used to deliver aerosolized medications, commonly used for respiratory conditions.
  • The performance of nebulizers, particularly the mass and particle size of delivered medication, can be influenced by the driving gas used.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of using heliox as a driving gas on nebulizer performance.
  • To compare nebulizer performance with heliox versus air.
  • To determine optimal conditions for heliox-powered nebulization.

Main Methods:

  • Two nebulizer designs (conventional and continuous) were tested with albuterol.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nebulizers were powered by air and heliox at various flow rates and albuterol concentrations.
  • Aerosol deposition was measured using a cotton plug, and particle size was analyzed with a cascade impactor.
  • Main Results:

    • Heliox significantly decreased inhaled albuterol mass and altered particle size compared to air (p < 0.001).
    • The reduction in inhaled mass was less with a conventional nebulizer (16%) than a continuous one (67%).
    • Increasing heliox flow improved particle size and inhaled mass, approaching levels seen with air, while higher albuterol concentration maintained smaller particle size.

    Conclusions:

    • Heliox significantly affects inhaled medication mass and aerosol particle size during nebulization.
    • Increased gas flow is recommended when using heliox to power nebulizers to optimize drug delivery.
    • Nebulizer design influences the extent of performance changes when using heliox.
