Summary

Transsternal thymectomy offers a safe and effective treatment for myasthenia gravis. This surgical approach leads to significant long-term symptom improvement and remission in most patients.

Background:

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease.
Thymectomy is a recognized treatment for myasthenia gravis.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a standardized transsternal thymectomy approach for myasthenia gravis.

Main Methods:

A sternotomy approach was used for complete thymus excision.
100 consecutive patients underwent the procedure between 1977 and 1993.

Main Results:

Zero mortality and minimal morbidity were observed.
84% of patients were extubated within 1 hour post-surgery.
78% of patients showed improvement, with 69% achieving remission.

Conclusions:

Transsternal thymectomy is a safe procedure with no mortality.
This surgical intervention provides significant long-term benefits for myasthenia gravis patients.
