    Background:

    • Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a complex neurological complication of liver disease.
    • The role of specific neuroamines, beyond octopamine, in HE pathogenesis is under investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of phenylethanolamine in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy.
    • To quantify plasma phenylethanolamine levels in patients with liver cirrhosis and HE.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma phenylethanolamine was measured using a radioenzymatic assay.
    • The study included 26 patients with biopsy-proven cirrhosis (with or without HE) and 7 healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • Plasma phenylethanolamine levels showed a statistically significant correlation with the presence of liver cirrhosis.
