Abstract:
Recently, the term "serous cystadenoma" has been adopted in the pathological community to qualify the so-called microcystic adenoma of the pancreas. This change in terminology was based on the emergence of a new type of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas, i.e., the macrocystic variant. We report one case of pathologically proven macrocystic serous cystadenoma of the pancreas for which the diagnosis of mucinous cystadenoma was suggested preoperatively. This rare but benign macrocystic variant exhibits radiological features similar to those of mucinous cystadenoma. In addition, inflammatory changes and foci of hemorrhage within the tumor may simulate mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.
Insights
The term "serous cystadenoma" now includes a macrocystic variant of the pancreas. This rare pancreatic tumor can mimic mucinous cystadenoma on imaging, posing diagnostic challenges.
Area of Science:
- Pathology
- Gastroenterology
- Oncology
Background:
- The classification of pancreatic cystic neoplasms is evolving.
- Serous cystadenoma, previously characterized as microcystic, now encompasses a macrocystic variant.
Observation:
- A case of pathologically confirmed macrocystic serous cystadenoma is presented.
- Preoperative diagnosis suggested mucinous cystadenoma.
Findings:
- The macrocystic serous cystadenoma shares radiological features with mucinous cystadenoma.
- Inflammatory changes and hemorrhage within the tumor can mimic malignancy.
Implications:
- Accurate preoperative differentiation between serous and mucinous cystic neoplasms is crucial.
- Awareness of the macrocystic variant's imaging characteristics is important for diagnosis.
