Thick loop transurethral resection of the prostate

Summary

New thicker resection loops for transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) provide similar clinical benefits to standard thin loops without increased side effects. This improved TURP technique enhances surgical vision for safer prostate tissue removal.

Background:

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Current TURP techniques utilize thin resection loops, which may have limitations in visualization and tissue removal efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of novel, thicker resection loops designed for TURP.
To assess if these loops offer advantages in terms of tissue vaporization and hemostasis.

Main Methods:

Two open studies involving 156 patients (91 with Vapor Cut, 65 with Wedge) undergoing TURP using thick resection loops.
Follow-up at 1 year to assess clinical outcomes and complications.

Main Results:

Thick loop TURP demonstrated comparable clinical benefits to thin loop TURP at 1-year follow-up.

Significant improvements in peak urinary flow rate and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) were observed.

No increase in major complications such as impotence or incontinence was noted, though minor issues like bleeding and stenosis occurred.

Conclusions:

Thicker resection loops enhance surgical vision during TURP, enabling more accurate and safer prostate tissue resection.
This technique can be integrated into standard TURP procedures with minimal modifications.
