[Unusial oraparallel changes in the retinal periphery (author's transl)]

W Tillmann

    Klinische Monatsblatter Fur Augenheilkunde
    |June 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Peripheral retinal changes, distinct from lattice degeneration, were observed in 6 patients. These depigmented, circular changes, primarily in the lower temporal quadrant, appear to be a pigmentary epithelium variation without detachment risk.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal Diseases
    • Pigmentary Epithelium

    Context:

    • Peripheral retinal changes require accurate differentiation from common conditions like lattice degeneration.
    • Understanding variations in retinal pigmentary epithelium is crucial for diagnosing and managing retinal conditions.

    Purpose:

    • To describe and differentiate unusual peripheral retinal changes from lattice degeneration.
    • To investigate the characteristics and potential implications of these novel retinal findings.

    Summary:

    • Six patients (8 eyes) presented with peripheral, ora-parallel retinal changes.
    • These changes were ophthalmoscopically distinct from lattice degeneration, characterized by smaller, depigmented, and longer circular extensions without palisades.
    • The lower temporal quadrant was predominantly affected.

    Impact:

    • These findings suggest a potential variation of the retinal pigmentary epithelium.
    • The observed changes appear to have no inherent tendency to cause retinal detachment, aiding in prognosis and patient counseling.
